Abstract – With the evolution of complex electronic devices, packing density has increased tremendously. Repairing such a device has become practically impossible as it is really difficult to get to the circuit level of such devices. The whole device will be at loss when one tiny circuit within the device cracks or breaks and eventually leads to replacing the entire device. This adds to electronic waste and moreover the time delay for replacing the device will not be tolerable in critical applications. Self-healing is the technology by which the circuit fixes itself so fast that the application doesn’t even come to know about the occurrence of a failure mode. This paper is a study of various methodologies used in electronic circuits to achieve self-healing. A comparative analysis of immune system of human body and electronic self-healing is made with the objective of building future electronics systems to last longer and be more reliable. Bringing this type of electronic immune system to integrated-circuit chips opens up a new world of possibilities.
